Do I need a fire door for a loft conversion?

Building regulations state that you must install fire doors when converting your roof space. Fire doors and partitions play a critical role in ensuring the safety of occupants during emergencies, particularly in protecting stairways as essential escape routes. In this instance, all doors throughout your property would need to be changed to fire doors to protect a safe route from the loft space, to a suitable exit from the property.

What does GRP mean?

GRP stands for Glass Reinforced Plastic.

How do I fit a door?

Fitting a door is a task that requires accuracy, patience, and the right approach, but it is something many DIY enthusiasts can achieve with confidence when they follow a clear, methodical process. The first and most important step is preparation. Begin by measuring your door frame carefully—take the width and height in several places because frames are often not perfectly square. Use the smallest measurement as your guide, and choose a door that is slightly larger so it can be trimmed for a perfect, custom fit. Always check the manufacturer’s guidelines before trimming, especially with fire doors, as these have strict limits on how much material can safely be removed.

Once your measurements are confirmed, place the door against the frame and mark any areas that need trimming. Work slowly, removing small amounts at a time using a plane, sander, or saw, and frequently check the fit to avoid over-trimming. Aim for an even gap of around 2–3mm along the sides and top. The bottom clearance will depend on your flooring: generally 10–20mm for carpet or 5–10mm for hard floors to allow for smooth movement and ventilation.

Next, position and mark your hinges. Most internal doors require two or three hinges, spaced approximately 150mm from the top and bottom, with an optional third hinge in the centre for heavier or solid-core doors. Carefully chisel out shallow recesses (mortices) so the hinges sit flush with the door edge. Fix the hinges to the door first, then wedge or support the door in place while attaching the hinges to the frame.

Once the door is hanging, open and close it several times to test for smooth operation. Look for rubbing, sticking, or uneven gaps and make any necessary adjustments. When satisfied with the fit, install the latch, handle, and any additional hardware. To finish, lightly sand the door and apply your chosen paint, stain, or varnish to protect the surface and achieve a professional appearance.

With careful preparation, precise trimming, and steady adjustments, fitting a door can be completed smoothly, safely, and to a high standard.
